Hugh Craig Allison ~ Our Dad
Dad was born in the small town of Viscount, Saskatchewan 97 years ago to Hugh Craig Allison and Mary Allison (nee Rowatt). Dad was pre deceased by his two older sisters, Doreen and Betty.
After Dad graduated from Moosomin Collegiate and his father retired from the Royal Bank of Canada, the Allison family moved back to Vancouver, BC. Here, Dad trained with the local Cadet core and began working with Harrison and Crossfield (H and C), an Industrial Chemicals company. Luckily, Dad was just too young to go to War. As a young man, Dad enjoyed working during the week, playing tennis with his sisters and going to the local, live big-band dances at the community Hall on the weekends. It was at one of these dances that Dad met Sylvia Mary Fiore, fell in love and got married on July 11, 1953.
While in Vancouver, Dad celebrated the birth of his first child, Jeffrey Craig Allison on December 26, 1956, then Julie Mary Allison (Dodds) on October 31, 1958. He was then transferred by H and C to Regina where his third child, Trudy Lisa Allison (Pavan) was born on May 25, 1963.
While in Regina, Dad developed many long-lasting friendships. His old photos and stories were a testament to his love of socializing, dancing, travelling and volunteering with the Kiwanis Club and United Church. We have many fond memories of the time we spent as a family over the summers in the Qu’ Appelle Valley.
In the early 1970’s, Dad was transferred to Calgary with H and C where our family lived at our home in SW Calgary for more than 50 years. Here, Dad celebrated many happy times including almost 70 years of marriage to the love of his life until Mom passed on September 17, 2022. During this time, Dad was blessed to participate in the marriage of his three children, the births of seven grand daughters (Christine Bullock, Kelsey Dodds, Janaye Taylor, Evangeline Allison, Katie Allison, Nikki Pavan and Jamie Pavan) the marriage of two grand daughters (Chris and Janaye) and more recently, the birth of two great grandchildren. (Porter and Kit Taylor)
While in Calgary, Dad continued his work with H and C until he retired at 55. He then continued to Volunteer his time with the Cosmopolitan Club, travel the World with friends, participate in cross-country skiing adventures, attend Aqua size classes at the Southland Leisure Centre, Golf at Lakeview, (their “home” course), brew and drink his own wine (which needed some getting used to) and enjoyed many years with their “Theatre Group.” Mom and Dad always enjoyed their time at their summer home on the Shuswap Lake in Sorrento, BC. Although Dad wasn’t all that handy with tools, he was an excellent gardener and became well-known in the neighborhood for his outstanding raspberry patch. He could also be counted on to pour you a tall G and T on the deck in the summer, or a nice Dark Rum and Coke in the colder months. Dinner time was always a good excuse for a glass or two of wine!
Dad truly enjoyed his Golden Years and we were so fortunate to have had so many happy, fun-filled family times until his passing at 97 ½ years old. You did it, Dad! You out-lived GrandPa Allison!! You have lived a wonderful long life and you have left a lasting, positive impression on many people who were proud to call you their husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor and friend. You should be proud that you have helped to shape who each of us are today. We love you, Dad. You were a wonderful father and someone who we could always count on for your easy-going personality and unconditional love and support. We will miss you terribly, and although you are gone, you will NEVER be forgotten.
With love,
Jeff, Julie and Trudy
