Gus Poulos (Konstantinos Papathanasiou) passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on the morning of February 11, 2026. He was born on January 25, 1933, to Nikolaos and Maria Papathanasiou in his beloved village of Skaloula, Greece.
Gus was a child during the Second World War, which greatly impacted his life. In his teenage years, he attended the Ecclesiastical School of Lamia. There, he had many adventures and fond memories that he loved to share with us. This is also where he gained much of the knowledge and wisdom he later passed down to his children and grandchildren. He went on to have a distinguished military service, where he was entrusted with many sensitive duties due to his education.
His Canadian adventure started in Vernon, BC, and he eventually settled in Golden, BC. There, his strong work ethic, creativity, and ingenuity helped him achieve great success. He started several businesses, including the Hilltop Café and the Golden Gate Motel. During this time, he married the love of his life, Zoi Lianos.
In 1982, the family moved to Calgary. Gus spent the rest of his years living peacefully as the head of his family, spoiling his grandchildren, and taking care of us all. In addition to being an amazing father and grandfather, he was an excellent chef, businessman, gardener, and carpenter, among many other talents. He will be remembered for his sharp wit and humour, which lasted until the very end. His kindness, hospitality, and generosity were truly unmatched, and he never asked for anything in return.
Gus is survived by his daughter, Mary (Apostolos); his son, Nick (Tara); and his grandchildren, Ephrosyne, Zoe, Kaia, and Kosta. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Zoi Poulos; his parents, Nikolaos and Maria Papathanasiou; and his siblings, Athanasia, Eugenia, George, and Themistocles. We will carry Gus’s love and memories with us always. He will be missed beyond words, and we feel so lucky to have had him in our lives.
Thank you to the staff and volunteers at Agapé Hospice for making Gus’s last days peaceful and comfortable.
