It is with heavy hearts, that we said goodbye to Gunter, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the age of 94.
Gunter was born December 10, 1929, in Soltau, Germany. He was the eldest son to Wilhelm and Dora and brother to Rolf. Dad had many fond memories of growing up there. He apprenticed as a carpenter and worked in the family-owned lumber mill and construction company.
Dad left Germany in 1953, starting a new life. He had met Erika, our mom, already in Germany and followed her here. They married in March of 1953. Upon arriving in Canada, he was settled in Fincastle, Alberta. There he worked on sugar beet farms. Dad's eldest two sons Wilfried and Ullrich, were born in that area. Subsequently, he got employment with a construction firm in Taber and then in 1959 moved his young family to Calgary, where his youngest two children Barbara and Mark, were born. Continuing to work in construction, he eventually attained the position of general superintendent supervising the construction of hospitals and other large projects.
Dad was a member of the German Canadian Club. There, he volunteered on the Board of Directors, attended dances, and sporting events, and managed the mixed choir. The choir travelled and performed concerts in various cities in Canada, the United States and Germany. Dad loved visiting his home country.
Dad is now resting with Mom and leaves behind his four children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
