Gunnar Hansen Obituary

Jorgen Gunnar (Gunnar) Hansen passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, surrounded by family, at the age of 95. Born in Fakse, Denmark, Gunnar was the son of Rasmus and Emilie Hansen. He is survived by his son Erik, grandchildren Alexander and Taylor, and niece Susanne. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Dorothy, and his brother, Frede.

Gunnar left Denmark immediately at the end of World War II, sailing the world for the Maersk Line, building a lifetime of memories. He came to Canada in the early 1950’s, eventually settling in Calgary where he met his future wife Dorothy and where they raised their son Erik. Gunnar had a long and rewarding career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, retiring with great pride in 1990. Gunnar spent his retirement years volunteering for the RCMP Veterans Association, golfing, enjoying the outdoors and traveling. He loved spending time with his son and grandchildren.

He made several new friends later in life while living at the Manor Village at Signature Park, including his special friend Helen. He enjoyed playing cribbage, watering plants and winning the occasional putting contest.

Gunnar had a lifelong interest in learning, always curious about new technology and how things work. He had an adventurous spirit, landing in Canada with little to his name and made a meaningful life for himself and his family. He will be remembered for his strength, energy, and love for his family. He passes along his commitment to police work and love of golf to his grandson Alexander and his yearning to travel and experience the world to his granddaughter Taylor.

A memorial service will be held at the Manor Village at Signature Park, Calgary, July 15, 2025, at 2 pm, with a reception to follow at The Manor Village at Signature Park 1858 Sirocco Dr SW Calgary, AB
