Gerald William Billings

On May 12, 2026 at the age of 90 years, Gerald William Billings (Jerry) passed peacefully at the Foothills Hospital after a sudden illness. He is lovingly remembered by his children Meg, Liam, and Brendan (Shelley); as well as many friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his wife Ann.

Jerry was born in Delia, Alberta in 1936. Jerry greatly enjoyed meeting and interacting with people. He became a teacher in his early twenties and travelled the world, working and living in such places as South Africa, the UK and Australia, where he met his wife Ann. They got engaged, came to Calgary and were married and a family soon followed.

Jerry especially enjoyed his teaching career with the Calgary Catholic School Board, where he worked for many years as an extremely dedicated teacher helping his students to learn. Jerry obtained his Master’s degree in Education in 1981 from the University of Calgary. He loved teaching so much that after he retired, he worked as a substitute teacher and in later years also tutored students.

Jerry believed in giving back to the community and liked to help others, including volunteering with the church in different roles and he and his wife Ann were captains for the Mount St. Francis Retreat House for many years.

Jerry also volunteered with the Diabetes and the Heart and Stroke Foundation as well.

Although Jerry suffered from many chronic health conditions over several years, he still maintained his unique and keen sense of humor right up until the end of his life. His final years were spent enjoying activities with his many friends at the Atria Arbour Lake Retirement Home.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Dr. NW, Calgary, AB) on Friday June 19, 2026 at 11:00 am.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Foothills Hospital (Unit 36) and Atria Arbour Lake Retirement Home for Jerry’s care.
