George Arthur Garbutt passed away, at home, peacefully on April 21, 2026 at the age of 82.
Born on April 5, 1944, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, George was the beloved son of Arthur and Louise Garbutt. He built a life grounded in dedication to family, community, and service, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
George was a devoted husband to Margaret for 56 years. Father to Geoff (Lisa) and Shannon (Dale) and a proud grandfather to William, Ryan and Evan. He is also lovingly remembered by his sister Sharon (David), as well as his many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. George took immense pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandsons, always offering steady encouragement and support. He spent many days at soccer pitches, lacrosse boxes, hockey arenas, swimming pools and band concerts.
Professionally, George worked as a Group Benefits Insurance agent at GreatWest Life and the Pension and Benefits manager with Lehigh Heidelberg Cement (Genstar), where he was respected for his integrity and commitment. Beyond his career, he was deeply involved in his community. For the past 13 years, he was an active and dedicated Shriner, contributing his time and energy through many roles with the Al Azhar Shriners. His passion for service extended further as president of the Midnapore Community Association, a board member at Midland’s United Church, and as a baseball and hockey coach when his kids were younger.
George will be remembered for his generosity, his strong sense of duty, and his unwavering love for family. His legacy of kindness and community spirit will live on in the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
We would like to thank dad’s oncologist, Dr. Nimira Alimohamed, and the many doctors, nurses, healthcare aides and lab techs who cared for our dad at South Health Campus. In lieu of flowers, George has requested that you please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
A Celebration of George’s life will be held at Okotoks United Church (43 Riverside Dr., Okotoks, AB) on Friday May 29, 2026 at 2:00 pm.
