George (Yuri) Homenko, after 83 years walking, driving, exploring and always taking “the scenic route” left us peacefully on Thursday, October 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. George was a man of passion and intellect along with a DROLL sense of humor. His charismatic charm drew people to him, and he was greatly respected as an honorable, trustworthy, humorous man with a generous spirit. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Judy, his daughters Maria, Didi, Lisa and Lesley and his son Chris, along with their spouses, 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Our beloved Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa and especially our “PAW” was born on August 30, 1941, in Dobrapolia, Ukraine and was proud of his Ukrainian heritage. He immigrated to Canada with his parents Mykola and Maria and 4 siblings and settled in Winnipeg, MB.
George enrolled in Architecture at the U. of M. His summer job took him to Alberta where he worked for Mid-West Surveys. He often laughed at himself, as he was only wearing his James Dean T-shirt, jeans and blue suede shoes when they left for a 3-week job in the harsh bush. His hard work finally convinced the Party Chief to give him an advance enabling him to purchase the proper gear. He loved exploring all the areas of Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C., eventually settling in Edmonton where he met his love, Judy, at McElhanney Surveys. They moved their family to Calgary and in September 1977 formed CanAlta Land Surveys which is operating today under GeoTrek Land Surveys.
George and Judy worked hard side-by-side permitting them to travel extensively in Canada, the U.S.A., and enjoyed several trips to the Continent where they always visited Hannover where his family lived in a charming area before immigrating to Winnipeg, MB. George was enraptured with Pinebrook Golf and Country Club becoming one the first members, directors, Club Captains and started several syndicates. He was very proud of being Senior and then Super Senior Club Champion. George and Judy made many wonderful friends over the years and our family enjoyed many occasions at our second home. Once retired they enjoyed many wonderful times near his beloved San Diego and made many lasting friendships.
George’s love of music was eclectic from the classical composers to the classic crooners to rock & roll and country. He had a playlist for everyone! He enjoyed many live opera performances including his favorite “Carmen”, in Vienna, Austria.
George will be laid to rest at Eden Brook Cemetery where he will forever watch his beloved Pinebrook and especially the Rockies, followed by a celebration of life to be announced at a future time.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to the Alzheimer's Society, Cancer Research or the Calgary Dream center.
A Celebration of George's Life will be held at Pinebrook Golf and Country Club (166 Pinebrook Way SW) on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. Please dress in casual attire.
