We are saddened to announce the death of Ernest Geoffrey Powell (Ernie/Geoff) on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
Geoff lived and worked in Wales before emigrating to Canada at the age of 77. He placed great importance on the value of education. He worked as a high-school educator in Wales throughout his career and encouraged his children and grand-children to obtain the best possible education.
Ernie was a man of strong principles, believing in hard-work, honesty, loyalty, courage, discipline, and kindness. These timeless values have been passed on to his children and grandchildren. He loved music, particularly jazz, and played both the piano and organ with great finesse. He would often entertain his grandchildren by jazzing up popular songs, particularly at birthdays and family gatherings.
Geoff wasn’t just a dad and grandpa; he was a mentor and great friend. His values, love, and the lessons he taught will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
We are extremely grateful to Dr. Jennifer Grossman and her medical team at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, and to the staff at AgeCare, Walden Heights, for the care and love provided to Ernie during his final years.
If friends and family so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Ernie’s name to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (1331 29 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4N2) or via https://albertacancer.ca.
A celebration of Ernest Geoffrey Powell’s life was held on Thursday October 3, 2024, followed by a social gathering at the family home.
