Ericka (Ricki) Zubiak Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ricki Zubiak (nee Yurkat), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family. The morning of December 5, 2024, she joined her beloved husband Mike in God’s kingdom where she also joined her parents, George and Helene and brother Eric.

She is survived by her children Glen (Sara) Zubiak and Liza Pincombe and her grandchildren Michael (Jennessa) Zubiak, Aiden Pincombe, Emily-Ann Pincombe and Megan Pincombe and by her sister Esther Yurkat.

Born November 1, 1931 in Paszieszen (Memelland), Lithuania, Ricki’s early life was marked by the turbulence and hardship of World War II as her family fled their home ahead of the Russian invasion in 1944. After the war the family’s resilience and determination carried them overseas to Canada and then over land to Saskatchewan. Here, Ricki courageously built a new life, starting by working at the Melville hospital, bringing care and compassion to those in need.

It was in Melville, while working at the local drug store, that she met the love of her life, Mike Zubiak. Together, they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, adventure and unwavering devotion. Ricki and Mike raised two children, instilling in them the values of hard work, kindness, and the importance of family.

After a few moves around southern Saskatchewan that included job changes and different business ventures they moved to Calgary in 1972. It was here in Calgary that they built their lives becoming involved in the community. Ricki was frequently seen working in the kitchens at the community hall or at church for many different events. It was in these kitchens where so many friendships, memories and laughs were had.

Ricki’s life was a testament to her strength, love, and perseverance. Throughout her life she focused on providing stability to her family and support to her community. A woman of deep faith, her warmth touched everyone she met, and her legacy will live on through the lives she impacted.

In retirement the places that provided Ricki with the most peace and happiness were her garden and church. In the summer you could find her in the garden 12-14 hours a day weeding, tending and watering. Sunday church service is what helped her to heal and bloom.

She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

A Celebration of Ricki’s Life will be held at later date and time we hope you will join us and share your memories and stories when we do set a day. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada in her memory.
