Ellen May Smith, cherished wife of James Riley Smith, passed away peacefully on Thursday April 1, 2021 at the Rockyview Hospital.
Ellen was born in Toronto and raised on a farm near Welland, Ontario. At the age of 18 she took the courageous step to move out west. She arrived in Calgary, Alberta and ever since called it home. Ellen was an incredibly determined hard working woman who, at the same time, had an incredible zest for life. Her family was always her highest priority taking great pride and interest in the activities of her daughters and subsequently her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When not adding all these activities to her calendar she was busy working to help support the family.
Ellen worked in a variety of careers including 35 years as a very successful realtor. At the same time, she was dedicated to the service of the South Calgary Rotary Club, taking great pride in the contributions the club gives back to the community. To know Ellen was to love her. Her vibrant personality and boisterous laughter always filled the room. She took a very genuine interest in all with whom she met. She shared her love unconditionally and anyone who knew her felt that.
Ellen is survived by James Riley Smith, her loving husband of 41 years; daughters Sharon Gibson (Jim), Kim Adolphe (Wayne), Diane Massie, and stepdaughter, Tracy Orr; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Charlie Wood, Gordon Wood and David Wood; her sister Betty McNish; their spouses; and the numerous nieces and nephews in their families.
A sincere thank you and appreciation is extended to all those in Ward 57 at the Rockyview Hospital for the kind and generous support, compassion and care offered to Ellen.
There will be no funeral service or celebration of her life at this time.
