Elizabeth (Liz, Lizzie) Spittal passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, at the age of 67, surrounded by her family and dearest friends. She was the youngest child of the late Daniel Richard Spittal and Elizabeth Irene Locke Spittal (nee Irving), and is survived by her siblings, Richard Daniel Spittal (Sandy), Sydney Leigh Johnson (Wade), John Frederick Spittal (Fon), and her sons, Russell John Spittal (Anna) and Raymond Joseph Sydney Cote (Layni).
A true daughter of Calgary, Liz grew up in the Britannia and Willow Park neighbourhoods. From her early school days, Liz’s vibrant spirit shone through her love for history, English, art, physical education, drama, and dance—especially during the high-energy years she spent as captain of the cheer team at Lord Beaverbrook. Liz loved school.
A proud Calgarian, Liz earned her three degrees, including a master’s degree, from the University of Calgary and turned her lifelong love of learning into a career in education. She dedicated herself to public education with the Calgary Board of Education. Her professional heart soared when she became an English Language Learner (ELL) teacher and leader, where her passion for culture and history merged with her devotion to students.
Never one to slow down, Liz’s “retirement” became her grand adventure. She took her expertise to a global level, writing university courses, teaching in Vietnam, and consulting with international schools in Macao, China, and Cambodia—a period she called the pinnacle of her career.
After completing a 39-year contribution to education, Liz embraced life’s simple joys with boundless energy. She could be found hiking mountain trails, biking, swimming, golfing, dancing, volunteering, hosting extended family gatherings, and travelling with family and friends.
The greatest joy of Liz’s life was the time she spent raising Russell and Raymond, who were the purpose of her life. Every decision she made, personally and professionally, circled back to what was best for her boys. She was immensely proud of her sons and their young families. The role of “Grandma” added a delightful new chapter to Liz’s story. In recent months, she especially cherished spending time with her four grandchildren—Rowan, Charlie, and the twins Lena and Cohen.
Liz was a woman of deep conviction, fierce integrity, and terrific humour. Throughout her life, she was a feminist and active member of the Alberta New Democratic Party. She was a tireless advocate for those whose voices were suppressed. Liz used ethics as her North Star and often skipped past small talk in favour of the “big questions,” using her curious mind to connect with people on a deeper level.
Liz’s hospitality knew no borders. As a proud Calgarian, Canadian, and local host, she welcomed the world into her home through her Airbnb. Unsurprisingly, many guests became lifelong friends. Liz helped newcomers find their footing in Calgary. Whether she was hosting an event or welcoming a guest or friend, Liz’s life was an exercise in radical inclusivity.
Liz lived with a profound sense of humour and gratitude, frequently sharing how fortunate she felt for her incredible family, rewarding career, and vast network of dear friends who became her chosen kin. Liz’s big smile and big thinking tell the story of a life defined by curiosity, loyalty, compassion, and an enduring zest for every new horizon. She leaves behind a legacy of education and a reminder to dance through every chapter of life.
An Open House to remember Liz will be held at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services South (5502 2 Street SW) on Friday, May 15, 2026 from 12:00 - 2:30 pm.
