Betty was born in Taghmon, Co. Wexford, Ireland on April 18th, 1931 to Patrick and Joanna Quigley, and grew up on a farm in the Irish countryside with her three older brothers, Mick, John and Paddy.
She trained as a registered nurse and midwife in Dublin, meeting her husband to be, Roy, during a period when he was himself, a Scot from Dumbarton, undertaking additional medical training in Dublin. When Roy subsequently set up as a general practitioner in Nakuru, Kenya, Betty took a job as a nurse at the War Memorial Hospital there. They married in Nakuru in 1960, but soon returned to the UK to start a family. Noreen, Morag and then the twins, Áine and David, followed in quick succession, in London and then in Dumfries, Scotland. 1969 saw them take the enormous step of emigrating with their young family to Edmonton, Alberta and that remained their home until 2006 when they moved to Calgary.
Betty was devoted to her Roman Catholic faith and worked tirelessly as a volunteer for every church parish she lived in, as well as for hospitals and many other charities. She could mend absolutely anything, was a talented seamstress and an amazing cook. She loved all kinds of music from easy listening and old Irish ballads, to classical music and above all, opera.
She was a loyal and steadfast friend, once met never forgotten. She will be deeply missed.
Betty is survived by her loving husband Roy; children Noreen (Keith), Morag (Don), Áine (Arthur), and David (Cory); grandchildren Payton, Ben and Sam; and great grandchild, Liam.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Southwood Care Home for looking after Betty so well and with such kindness and love for over five years.
