Elizabeth Schnitzler Obituary

On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta, Betty Schnitzler (97) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband John Laurence, her youngest son John Michael, and sons-in-law Wayne Schuster and Jack Huggins. She is survived by her loving children Bill (Pearlene), Ed (Cathy), Marie (Brian) Cole, Kathy Huggins, Jackie Schuster, Dawn (Don) France-Stotski, Bernadette (Darryl) Bossaer, and Angie (Bruce) Marsales, plus her 22 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.

Betty was born in 1926 on her parents’ farm in Lafleche, Saskatchewan. There were 7 children in her family. She went to rural school until Grade 5, then boarding school at Convent of Jesus Mary, Gravelbourg. After Betty graduated from Moose Jaw Normal School, she began teaching Grades 1 to 8 at Rosebud School, a one-room schoolhouse north of the town of Truax.

There Betty met her sweetheart, John. They kept their engagement secret until John was discharged from his service in WWII. They were married in 1946 and began farming SE of Truax. Over the next 17 years, they were blessed with 9 beautiful, healthy children. Family life was active and fulfilling. Betty excelled at motherhood and homemaking. Her homemade bread and buns were outstanding!

Throughout her life, Betty’s family was of utmost importance to her. Her exemplary faith in God was unwavering. She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Women’s League. After Vatican II, she was the first female reader at St. Anne’s Church, Truax. Betty’s fondest memories of Truax included church, school, and community activities such as Christmas concerts, dances, group picnics, box socials, field meets, carnivals, curling bonspiels, bridal showers and teas.

In 1975 Betty and John semi-retired from farming and moved to Regina. They were active members of St. Martin’s Parish Sunday Mass and weekday lay services. They dedicated time to hospital pastoral work and volunteered at nursing homes. They enjoyed socializing, playing cards, dancing, and their grandsons’ hockey games. Betty kept busy with her hobbies of quilting, knitting, crocheting, crafts, and cake decorating. She excelled at all. During these years they travelled extensively to Hawaii, California, and across the provinces.

In 1996, John and Betty moved to a villa condo in Calgary where many of their family already lived. Betty often said she felt like she was on an extended vacation in their new home! They enjoyed day trips to the mountains, family visits, grandchildren, cards, and Canasta tournaments. Meanwhile, Betty continued her hobbies plus learned to operate the home computer and digital camera. Each night ended with a Scrabble challenge with John.

After her beloved John passed in 2014, Betty moved to Amica Mature Living in Calgary. Her comfortable, homey suite plus the community kitchen/dining room allowed for continued family visits and gatherings. Betty’s memory and attention stayed keen. She maintained her interest in reading and crocheting. She enjoyed her email correspondence and watching religious programs on her computer. Betty especially enjoyed her daily games of dice and Tile Rummy with her faithful family. She was an avid contender to the end!

We will all greatly miss our beloved Matriarch’s presence and inspiration. Thank you to Dr. Han, Amica/Verve staff, and healthcare workers for their dedication and compassion during our mother’s life journey.
