Elias Condon, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the remarkable age of 105.
Elias is survived by his children, Jim Condon, Pelagia (George) Zikopoulos, and Chris Condon; his grandchildren, Jia Condon (Lisa), Sean (Andrea) Condon, Anna (Rob) Goertzen, and Nick Zikopoulos; and his great-grandchildren, Allakrea, Amelia, Niko, Ari, and Elias. He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Paraskevy, and his parents, Chrisostomos and Balassa.
Elias began his journey to Canada in 1951, sponsored by his late uncle, Jimmie Condon. He arrived with his wife, son Jim, and cousin Zoe, ready to build a new life. Shortly after settling in Calgary, Elias began work as a janitor at McGavin’s Bakery. His dedication and work ethic earned him a promotion to baker, a role he cherished for ten years. He later worked at the Wooden Shoe Bakery and Canyon Meadows Bakery, which was owned by his cousin and her husband. Over the years, he also contributed his talents to the City of Calgary Parks Division and Western Aluminum.
Elias was a cornerstone of Calgary’s Greek community and a devoted member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. His hands helped build the church, and his heart kept him in the altar as a volunteer for over six decades, even humorously calling himself the “oldest altar boy.” His tireless commitment to his faith and community touched countless lives.
Elias had a deep love for gardening, which was not just a pastime but a way to connect with others. His backyard became a place for entertaining friends over kohlrabi and ouzo, enjoying lively conversation and companionship. Elias loved to share the fruits of his labour with neighbours, offering fresh vegetables and welcoming guests to stop by and pick what they needed. His garden was a place of joy, generosity, and community—a reflection of the life he lived.
That same generosity extended far beyond Calgary. He sponsored children around the world for many years, fostering hope and opportunity where it was needed most. His charitable spirit shone brightly through his support for numerous causes.
Beyond his service, Elias cherished his family and found joy in the simple and beautiful aspects of life. He loved fishing and winter escapes to Mexico with his wife, family, and friends. His travels took him to Greece, California, Alaska, Hawaii, and even Jerusalem, where he was again baptized and walked the same paths as Jesus. Whether he was watching wrestling or hockey—“offering” the coach his advice from his armchair—Elias always brought humour and warmth to those around him. He welcomed everyone with a smile and a kind handshake, leaving an indelible impression on all who met him.
Elias’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Brentwood Intercare Morrison West Unit for their excellent care and compassion over the past four years.
Relatives and friends will have a Prayer Service at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services (5502 2nd Street S.W.). The Funeral Service will be held at St. Demetrios Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) on Monday, January 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Fellowship and lunch will be held afterward in the church hall.
Elias will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in Elias's name to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary.
