Effie (Efthimia Iatridis) Geatros Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Effie who died on Tuesday June 14, 2022 at the age of 84 years. Effie was born in the beautiful ocean front village of Paralion Astros, Kynourias Greece on December 21, 1937. She was predeceased by her parents Giorgios & Angeliki Dimas; her husband of almost 52 years George Geatros; her brothers Christos, Dimitri and Ioannis Dimas; sister-in-law Maria Dimas; nephews Peter Dimas and George Kokkonas. Left to mourn her loss,  Effie is survived by her three children Dean (Patti) Geatros, Mary (Dave) Zebak, and Harry (Sonya) Geatros; her most cherished grandchildren Shelby, Teghan, Grace, Jorja, and Luke;  her sisters Lambrini (Gerasimos) Konstantinos and Sophia Kokkonas; sisters-in-law Vasio Dimas & Katina Dimas; as well as many cousins; nieces and nephews; and SO many friends she considered family.

With the desire for a more prosperous life, Effie immigrated to Canada in 1957, joining her brother Chris in Moose Jaw.  After marrying her beloved husband George in 1959, they settled in Regina until 1972 when they moved to Calgary.

Effie was many things – a loving wife, mother and YiaYia, devoted sister, auntie, daughter, and friend. Effie was deeply spiritual and an active member of her church, and took great comfort in her faith, especially in her final days.

She was a sought after dress maker and seamstress who worked both in and out of the home while raising her children. She was an amazing cook and was well known by her kid’s friends for her many Greek specialties. Effie was an avid and active gardener who took such pride in her home – and whose doors were always open to everyone. Effie was SO funny – and when you least expected it, she would surprise you with a zinger that had you first gasping in shock then laughing hysterically.

Effie will be remembered by so many for her kindness, generosity, keen sense of humor, her strength & courage in facing so many challenges, and above all for how deeply and profoundly she loved her family.  Effie would say her grandchildren were “twice her own kids” because they came from her own kids. Being a YiaYia was her greatest joy as it embodied a pure, uncomplicated, unconditional love.

In Effie’s own words, “Love is important to all of us. We have to love everybody and God loves us all”

May her memory be eternal – she will be missed always.

Our sincerest thank you to the incredible staff at Rockyview Hospital, NU 58, for your exceptional guidance, wisdom, compassion and care during Effie’s final journey with us.
