It is with heavy hearts that the family of Edward Pichlyk mourns his passing on December 5, 2025 at the age of 91 years.
Edward is lovingly remembered by his children: Noelle Lloyd (Colin Lloyd), Ronald, Michelle, and David Pichlyk; grandchildren: Thomas, James and Morgan Lloyd; as well as his siblings: Alice, Al, Iris, Johnny, Marge, Shirley, Michael; and numerous relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Lena in 2024, his parents Michael and Nellie (Bodnarchuk) Pichlyk; his brothers Paul and Norman; and his sisters Willa, Olga, Marie, Violet, and Lydia.
Edward was born August 29, 1934 on a small family farm near the rural community of Caliento, Manitoba. As the oldest son, Edward shouldered the many responsibilities of working the farm and caring for his younger siblings.
On completion of his schooling, Edward joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, flying the North American Harvard aircraft and performing other aircraft maintenance duties. After his service had completed, Edward returned to the farm and continued his work in the area, including teaching at the local school.
Edward moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he was employed at Trans Continental Airlines as an aircraft painter. There he met the love of his life, Lena Nowosad. They were married on October 8, in Grandview, Manitoba and were devoted to each other for 63 years until her death in August 2024.
Both deeply faithful, Edward and Lena were founding members of St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic church in Winnipeg until moving to Calgary, Alberta in 1983 and joining St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Through the years, Edward continued working in the aviation industry as an aircraft painter at companies like CAE, Transair, Pacific Western Airlines and Canadian Airlines where he would achieve his Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s License as a S34 Composites Engineer.
Edward was a true gentleman, with a great sense of humor. A man of few words, when he spoke, he was respected and listened to. He appreciated spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, enjoying weekly Sunday family dinners and celebrations.
He was happiest spending time in nature, hunting, fishing or camping with his family. He enjoyed many hours, tending to his garden and creating delicious meals from the harvest. He could often be found tinkering in the garage with various projects, passing on to his sons his vast mechanical knowledge.
Edward’s steadfast devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren, friends and faith will be sorrowfully missed by all who knew him.
Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church (4903 45 St SW, Calgary, Alberta) on December 15, 2025 at 11:00 am. A recording of the service is available below.
