Dr. Stephanie Kozma Obituary

On January 22, we lost our precious Stephanie. She leaves to mourn her husband Ken Derry, her adored son Andrew (Janet), long-awaited granddaughter Noelle, sister Kathy (David) Woods and hundreds of her patients who cherished her caring and complete dedication to them.

Stephanie was born and raised in the community of Ramsay. She attended St. Anne’s elementary and junior high school. She then attended St. Mary’s Girls School graduating in 1968. For her high school science fair her topic of choice was hematology. Perhaps her interest in medicine was taking shape. Stephanie completed her pre-med at the University of Calgary, then off to medical school and the University of Edmonton, graduating in 1972. After her internship at the Calgary General Hospital came the daunting, exciting leap to private practice. While successfully maintaining her family practice, she also worked emergency shifts (always in her signature high heels) at the General Hospital and doing obstetrics at the Foothills Hospital. In 1993, Stephanie along with 3 distinguished colleagues, Dr. Linda Slocombe, Dr. Elwyn Brown and Dr. Morag Goldie established the Maternal Child Clinic at the Grace Hospital.

Due to health limitations, Stephanie made the difficult decision to retire in 2020. Stephanie made the decision to retire knowing that it was getting more challenging to give her beloved patients the care they deserved.

Stephanie was a beautiful, extraordinary woman, whose compassion and dedication defined her life. Through her unwavering commitment to her patients she touched countless lives and brought new generations into the world with care and kindness.

Her legacy of love, service and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Stephanie was predeceased by her parents Bill and Staffie Kozma, her uncle Albert Potoski, and her pets Bailey and Max.

A celebration of Stephanie’s life will be held on Saturday, August 16 at St. Stephen’s Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church (4903 45 St. SW) at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow. At the celebration, a book will be available for guests to write their favorite memories or stories about Stephanie. Additionally the podium will be open for anyone who wishes to share their memories.
