David Drader Obituary

David Paul Drader, age 76, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife, Joan, his sisters-in-law, and a cherished family friend. For a man who spent his life filling every room with sound, opinion, and enthusiasm, this was perhaps the first time he left a gathering quietly.

Born and raised in Calgary, Dave was a master storyteller and fast talker from the start—and he never slowed down. He had an endless supply of jokes, tall tales, and larger-than-life anecdotes that could captivate any room. To know Dave was to know someone who never met a stranger; his warmth, quick wit, and boundless personality drew people in and kept them smiling.

Though he built his life in Calgary, Dave's soul belonged to the water. He cherished beaches, lakes, and oceans, often losing himself in stunning sunsets while scanning the horizon for dolphins or whales. Nature brought him deep peace, and animals held a special place in his heart—he earned the affectionate nickname “bird man” for the way he fed, rescued, and quietly connected with birds.

A born entrepreneur and lifelong hustler,

Dave embraced opportunity wherever he found it—real estate, office leasing, retail, food deals, and always a promising side bet or bold new idea. Alongside his entrepreneurial spirit, he proudly served as a Returning Officer for Elections Canada for 20 years. He thrived on risk and never stopped dreaming up the next opportunity.

Active and adventurous, Dave embraced golf, sailing, pickleball, and baseball. He relished road trips, Las Vegas lights, California shores, and especially time with friends, whether trading stories over cards, dominating blackjack and poker tables, or engaging in fierce backgammon and crib battles.

Above all, Dave was a natural coach and mentor. He guided girls’ softball teams, men’s hockey squads, and even Joan’s volleyball team, later offering informal life coaching to anyone who needed it. With a tender spot for kids and teens, he listened, advised, and encouraged without hesitation. His caring could sometimes feel intense, but it always stemmed from a generous, big-hearted place.

And then there was Dave’s favorite role: chief mischief-maker and playful spirit. A kid at heart, he was always first to launch a water gun ambush, instigate a whipped-cream pie fight, or stir up playful chaos just to make people laugh. His silliness broke down walls, brought people together, and created stories that will be retold—probably with embellishments—forever.

Those closest to him will say it best: you either absolutely adored Dave or had a classic love/hate relationship with him. But no one ever doubted his authenticity. He lived boldly, passionately, and unapologetically his way—appropriately soundtracked by Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” which he considered less a song and more a personal mission statement.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Wes and Mavis Drader. He is survived by his beloved wife Joan, his devoted daughter Tracey, his proud grandchildren Jordyn and Camryn Buckingham, his sisters Gail (Bob) and Susan (Barry), and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who were the heartbeat of his world. Family was everything to him.

Dave will be deeply missed for his sharp humor, generosity, fierce love, unstoppable confidence, unsolicited advice, and unforgettable presence. He left the world louder, livelier, and far more entertaining—exactly as he would have wanted.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a local animal rescue or nature conservation charity in Dave’s memory. Or, alternatively, tell one of his stories, exaggerate it slightly, and make someone laugh. He would like that better.

Dave has now moved on to a place where the sunsets are endless, the card games never end, the birds are plentiful, and everyone finally lets him finish his stories. We are certain he has already made friends, offered unsolicited advice, explained how things really work, and is confidently running the place—his way.
