It is with deep sadness we share the sudden passing of David Charuk at the age of 64.
David was born in Calgary on November 6, 1960. After spending many years in Red Deer at Michener Centre, he moved back to Calgary to be closer to his family in 2014.
David was a kind and gentle soul who brought great joy to the people whose lives he touched. He appreciated the simple things in life: sitting in the sunshine, a good massage and a meal with his favourite people. David found peace in quiet places and some of his happiest hours were spent relaxing and listening to music at home. He also enjoyed swimming, bowling, fishing and going for walks in Baker Park.
Anyone who knew David, knew he was a foodie. He loved being in and around the kitchen and was always first in line for a taste. Perhaps his favourite event was the annual Ukrainian festival where he delighted in trying foods from his family’s heritage. He was a joy to cook for, rewarding us with his trademark happy hum when he was eating something he particularly enjoyed.
David was deeply loved by his family, and we will hold the precious time we had with him in our hearts forever. He showed incredible grace and courage in the face of challenges most of us can only imagine. Though our time with him was too short, his impact on the world will live on in the hearts of each one of us who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his mother, Peggy Charuk and his sister Bev (Ken) Fournie and their family. David is also survived by his special cousins and best friends, Tom Charuk and Teresa Scarlett.
He will be remembered by his many Charuk cousins as well as his roommates and friends around Calgary. David was predeceased by his father, Gene; brother, Paul; and his favourite auntie, Claire Charuk; as well as numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family would like to thank Renee Sak and all the wonderful staff at Vecova (House 116) for providing David with outstanding care and support over the past 10 years. Special thanks also to Melissa DeSmet, Amanda Froehler, and Drs. Elaine Bland and Janet Reynolds, whose kindness and compassion made an immeasurable difference in David’s life.
A private service will be held with family and friends to celebrate his life.
If so desired, donations in David’s memory can be made to Vecova (https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/support-vecova2024)
