Constance Creaghan

Constance Edwarda Creaghan of Calgary passed peacefully on Monday June 8, 2026 at the age of 91 years. She is predeceased by her husband Dominic Joseph Creaghan, and sister Elizabeth Agnes Henderson, and survived by sons Christopher Lyall Creaghan, Kevin Patrick Creaghan, and grand-daughter Freya McLean Creaghan. 

Constance was born in Calcutta, India, on November 20, 1934. Her father Henry Mountain worked in publishing and her mother Ida was a secretary. Her memories of growing up in Calcutta included attending the private girls school run by the Loretta Nuns where Sr. Teresa taught before founding her own order; her teenage memories of World War II include when the British army commandeered their home; she recalled the assassination of Mahatma Ghandi; and she had happy memories of life in India growing up with her many relatives and cousins. She came from a musical family where she learned to play the piano and flute, and she sang in the choir at the Catholic church where her mother directed the music and played the organ.

In 1953 Constance moved to England and studied at London’s Guy’s Hospital, from which she received her degree in Physiotherapy. In 1960 she traveled to Quebec City with plans to travel across Canada, eventually to visit Australia, while working jobs along the way including taking care of horses on various ranches. In 1962 she arrived in Calgary, where at an evening of Scottish Country Dancing she met her future husband Dominic Creaghan, originally of Dublin, Ireland. He was performing in the band and she approached him to compliment him on his drumming. That encounter changed the course of her cross country travel plans. They subsequently married in 1965, settling in the neighborhood of Mount Pleasant to raise a family and had two sons, Christopher Lyall and Kevin Patrick.

As a homemaker she was a capable seamstress who sewed her own clothes, curtains, and Halloween costumes for her two sons, and had various needle point projects over the years. Her masterpiece was completed over seven years, dubbed by her husband Dominic The Seven Year Stitch; it was exhibited at the Calgary Stampede. When her two sons reached their early teens, she returned to professional life and worked nearly three decades in the Physiotherapy department at the Bethany Care Center. As a member of St. Joseph’s Parish she participated in various events as a 35+ year member of the Catholic Women’s League.

A lifelong music lover, she joined a recorder group and a piano group, each of which performed at monthly meetings; and she had regular season tickets with friends to the opera and symphony. She provided her two sons with a strong musical education, supporting her husband and Kevin in their many band trips to annual parades, tournaments and events in and around Calgary, and Christopher in his endeavors as organist in New York City.

In retirement she pursued her youthful dreams for worldwide travel with her travel partner Jean Kramer, including cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal; the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, CA; a wintertime Ice Road tour to Tuktoyaktuk including a stay with an Inuit elder; Easter Island; New York City; in addition to family and annual reunion visits to London with her co-graduates from Guy’s Hospital. 

A lover of nature, she was avid in her enjoyment of the outdoors, with an extensive knowledge identifying birds, flowers, and constellations. Many summers were filled with family camping trips, hiking and exploring the Rocky Mountains. Cross country skiing was a frequent wintertime activity. She joined a hiking group which she dubbed The Fifth Dimension, and remained an active member with them until age 87. 

In recent years a diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis caused an end to most activities, though she remained connected to close friends, and as a lifelong learner enjoyed the intellectual engagement of expanding her vocabulary with daily crossword puzzles, and keeping abreast of current events and news, always with strong opinions. She entered the Bethany Care Center spending her final years as a patient where she had once worked, and where she continually complimented the exemplary care she received from the nursing staff. She remained alert and aware until the end, passing away gently and peacefully in their care. 

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (640 19 Avenue NW) on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 10:30 am with a reception to follow.
