Christopher Jacob Stephen van Loon passed away recently at age 37, in Calgary, Alberta. Chris leaves to mourn his beloved MaryJane Murzello and their young son Luca van Loon. Also missing him, is his loyal golden retriever, Lincoln.
Chris was born in St. Eustache, Quebec on March 5th, 1987. His school years were spent in Winnipeg. He and his brother Jesse and their group of friends got into all kinds of silly boy mischief as they grew. Chris loved the game of soccer, playing both indoors in the winters and outdoors in the summer. Some of the traits that served him well in later life were developed in these early years. For example, he’d use his special sense of the 3D geometry of things to pack the truck up with camping supplies as efficiently and as tightly as possible. In 1995, he saved his allowance, like so many young Winnipeggers, for the “Save the Jets” fund. The Winnipeg Jets 2.0 was his favourite team, as you could immediately tell by his clothing and hat choices.
When he was 19, Chris left Winnipeg to make Calgary his new home. He learned construction skills, first in roofing, and then in the fabrication and installation of building cladding systems. He also used his cooking talents at several local restaurants.
Chris was a big-hearted fellow with a quirky sense of humour. He loved music and could dance to almost anything with carefree abandon. He was the luckiest guy in the world when he met MaryJane in 2013. Their relationship thrived on good food and good laughs. They went on so many mini-adventures, often with a fur baby, enjoying each other’s company.
In 2022, their beautiful baby boy Luca was born. Being parents changed their lives in so many ways and all for the better. Chris delighted in being Luca’s Daddy. When he went clothes shopping, he would inevitably come back with outfits that matched for him and Luca to wear.
In addition to MaryJane and Luca, Chris will be sorely missed by his father, Louis van Loon; mother, Kathy Pratt; brother, Jesse van Loon; close friend, Logan; and very many other relatives, friends and co-workers.
Those who knew Chris are warmly invited to join us at an informal Celebration of Life at the Tuxedo Park Community Hall (202 - 29th Avenue NE, Calgary AB) on Friday, June 28th, 2024 at 6:00 pm. The event will be alcohol-free.
