It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Anne Juhasz (née Christie) on January 7, 2026, at the age of 80. Carol passed away peacefully at Southwood Hospice in Calgary, Alberta.
Born in Pasadena, California, Carol moved to Calgary in 1950, where she grew up with a deep love for animals and adventure. She was the beloved middle child of Norman J. and Marion Christie (both predeceased), and sister to Norman K. (Chris) Christie and Kevin J. (Katie) Christie. She is also remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews: Megan (Andrew) Christie Tooes, Shawn Christie, Kyle Christie, Linda Christie, and Bruce Christie.
Carol met her husband, Jim Juhasz, at Mount Royal College, and they have been inseparable ever since. After completing school—including time in Paris to finish French immersion—Carol returned home, and Jim asked for her hand in marriage. They were married on July 29, 1967, at Christ Church in Calgary, celebrating a lifelong love that spanned 58 years, as husband and wife and best friends.
In their early dating years, Jim and Carol worked together at Heritage Park, before Carol began her administrative career and Jim became a teacher. Carol went on to work for many years as an Executive Assistant at London Life Insurance Agency in Calgary, Alberta, and had the opportunity to work part-time in order to raise her children and maintain a balanced home life—a role she cherished deeply. Together, Jim and Carol built a life full of laughter, fond memories, and shared experiences with friends and family.
Carol was the loving mother to Kaura Marie Grant (née Juhasz) and Jason Juhasz; mother-in-law to Douglas Grant; and cherished grandmother to Lilah Rose Grant (daughter of Kaura and Doug).
Carol was a lover of all creatures great and small. Over the years, the family had many beloved cats and dogs, including Shelties who traveled with Carol and Jim throughout Western Canada during obedience competitions in the 1980s. She also volunteered with PALS – Pet Access League Society, bringing comfort to seniors and hospital patients through pet therapy.
In her later years, Carol became an avid Cat Fancier, actively supporting both the Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA) through sponsorship, donations, judging, and raffles, while showing her own beloved cats. Through this community she formed lifelong friendships and earned many awards and accolades.
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” - Anatole France-
Carol’s soul was truly wide awake. Her gifted connection to all animals was a testament of her caring nature.
Carol had a compassionate spirit and a creative streak. Growing up she enjoyed ballet, ice skating, and singing, and later found joy in creating digital and handmade greeting cards and stationery for family and cat shows. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, known especially for her bread, Hungarian fried bread, ribs, and roast pork—often made in abundance for family gatherings. The family shares cherished memories of Radium Hot Springs vacations and the Hungarian tradition of roasting bacon over an open fire.
She was kind-hearted, generous, smart, strong, fierce, and resilient. Her warmth and compassion created ripples that continue through her family and community.
Carol is survived by her husband Jim, her children Kaura Marie (Doug) Grant and Jason Juhasz, her granddaughter Lilah Rose, her brothers Norman K. (children Linda & Bruce) and Kevin J. (children Megan, Shawn & Kyle) and their families.
At Carol’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, Carol requested donations be made to the Pet Access League Society (PALS) or the Calgary Humane Society.
