It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Carmen Chrumka, on Thursday July 10, 2025 at the age of 83 years.
Carmen was born in Sudbury, Ontario and raised in a francophone family by her parents Romeo and Lillian Leroux and her maternal grandmother Aldea Tyne.
After graduating from Sudbury High School, she completed a four-year degree majoring in Food and Nutrition at MacDonald Institute at the University of Guelph. She met John Chrumka, her future husband and a veterinary student, at Guelph; they married after graduation on April 23, 1964.
The couple lived in Watford, Ontario then moved to Alberta where they lived in Medicine Hat, Tilley and finally settled in Calgary in 1968. During this time Carmen completed her B.Ed. at the University of Calgary and her M.Ed. at Gonzaga University. She worked at the Calgary Catholic School District as a teacher and administrator.
Carmen was an intelligent, and exceptionally well-read woman whose passion for learning never faded. A voracious reader and natural teacher, she eagerly shared books, articles, and ideas with her family, always encouraging curiosity and valuing education. Highly organized and remarkably capable, Carmen was also a gracious hostess and talented cook who delighted in bringing people together. Family was at the heart of everything she did. She cherished planning celebrations and finding the perfect gift. She traveled widely, thoughtfully arranging trips around the world, and valued time with her husband, children, and grandchildren, especially during winters in Palm Desert.
Carmen is lovingly remembered by her husband John, her children Bill Chrumka (Robin Wiltshire) of Toronto, Lynne Chrumka (Rod Miller) and Andrew Chrumka (Kristi) of Calgary and grandchildren William and Sarah Chrumka, Alexandra and Jack Miller, Lauren Chrumka and her sister Rita Leroux of Vancouver. She is also survived by her aunt Lucille Filion of Cornwall, her uncle Rene Leroux of Ottawa and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
A special thank you for the wonderful care she received from Dr. Martelle Preller, Dr. John Graham, Dr. Thomas Lim, and Dr. Marc Webster, as well as the compassionate care she received from the doctors, nurses and staff at the Southwood Hospice.
If desired, donations may be made in Carmen’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Dr SE) on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at 11:00 am.
