It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our adored Camelia Zaharia on July 5, 2025.
Born on March 28, 1967, in Craiova, Romania, Camelia moved to Belgium at the age of 24 to reunite with her boyfriend and soon-to-be husband. Shortly after their elopement, the couple immigrated to Canada and first settled in Montreal in 1992. That same year, they welcomed their only daughter while Camelia pursued her nursing degree to become a registered nurse. The family later moved to Toronto, and eventually made their home in Calgary, where they put down their roots.
Camelia was a force of nature in everything she pursued. Her nursing career spanned over 25 years, with a specialization in geriatric care. She took immense pride in her work and served as a role model and mentor to countless colleagues and students. Her care for patients was marked by exceptional compassion, dedication, and professionalism. Always striving to learn and grow, she exemplified the very best of her profession.
She affectionately referred to her tight-knit family as “The Three Musketeers,” and together they embarked on countless adventures. Camelia’s love of travel, art, and gastronomy flourished over the years. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, visiting some of the world’s most beautiful places—often more than once—and carefully planned each trip to create unforgettable experiences. She was always looking forward to her next adventure. In Calgary, she and her husband were devoted patrons of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Calgary Opera. No matter where she went, Camelia had a talent for discovering the best restaurants and was always the most elegantly dressed person in the room—her style and grace left a lasting impression.
Of all her accomplishments, Camelia was most proud of being a mother. She was deeply devoted to her daughter, balancing her demanding career with unwavering love and support. She celebrated her daughter’s achievements with boundless pride, and her love was infinite.
Camelia’s courageous two-year battle with ovarian cancer was nothing short of inspirational. She never gave up, advocating for herself and seeking every opportunity for treatment—always focused on creating more time and memories with her beloved grandchildren. Her strength, determination, and grace left a profound impact on everyone who witnessed her journey. Despite her determined battle with cancer, she came to recognize that the war could no longer be won. With unwavering strength, dignity, and clarity, she made the deeply brave decision to let go—choosing peace in the face of impossible odds.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 34 years, Cornel; her cherished daughter, Cynthia (Adam); and her adored grandchildren, Zephyr and Venice, who brought her immeasurable joy.
