Brigitte Regine George

It is with a heavy heart we announce that Brigitte Regine George nee Wollschon, age 79, of Calgary passed away Thursday February 2nd, at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary with both daughters by her side. Brigitte was born on October 16th, 1943, in Danzig, Germany to Horst and Klara Wollschon. She met her husband Walter in 1960 when he was stationed in Soest, Germany as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. They married in Soest in 1962 before moving to Canada in 1963 where they had two children, Marilyn and Sandra.

Once her daughters started school, she enjoyed various administrative positions including working as a school librarian and at the Mount Royal University Conservatory of Music, before spending the majority of her career with the Department of National Defense, where she worked until her retirement in 1998.

What Brigitte enjoyed most was spending time with family and friends. She made the most of her retirement, enjoying time in Osoyoos and trips to Europe and Newfoundland. She remained in close contact with her sister Gisela her entire life, with routine video calls and many visits over the years. She was an avid reader, always learning and sharing her knowledge. She enjoyed hosting Sunday lunches, and playing games with her grandchildren, with Nintendo being a favourite. She was a young, cool grandma!

Brigitte was an extremely intelligent and organized lady and kept up to date with the latest Apple technology, and she was tech-savvy even into her 70s. She loved keeping in touch with her friends and family and she had the best emojis.

Although Brigitte was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013 she continued on with regular life and remained at home. In 2019, her focus shifted to taking care of Walter who suffered from severe dementia until his death in April 2022. She missed him deeply and is now forever by his side.

Brigitte was predeceased by her husband Walter of 59 years and grandson Eric. She is survived by daughters Marilyn (Steve) and Sandra, sister Gisela (Wigbert), and her four grandchildren: Daniel (Katrina), Rachel (Béla), Jason, and Sarah.

Funeral services will be held at Evan J. Strong Funeral Home South (5502 2nd St SW, Calgary) on Thursday, February 9th, at 1:00 pm, followed by interment at the Field of Honour in Queen’s Park Cemetery (3219 4th St NW, Calgary) next to Walter. A small reception will follow at 107 Bralorne Cres SW at 3:00 pm, following the interment.  A recording of the service is available below for friends and family who were unable to attend.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada (parkinson.ca).
