Brenda Jane Marvel passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, in her home at the age of 74 after a long illness with diabetes.
Brenda was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, grew up in Pointe Claire, Quebec and lived in Calgary.
Brenda graduated from John Rennie High School and from the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing with her RN. Her first job was in Alice Springs, Australia with the flying Doctors helping indigenous peoples throughout the outback. After 2 years of adventure travel Brenda returned to the West where she worked at the Holy Cross Hospital Intensive Care Open Heart unit in Calgary and later joined the ICU staff at the Rockyview Hospital followed by many years in private nursing care.
Brenda loved to ski and she travelled all over the Rockies from Marmot Basin to Taos, New Mexico. Brenda was elected VP of the Petroleum Ski Club. She savoured Calgary's food and wine at special and monthly dinners and high tea with her foodie friends after participating in a restaurant and dining class with restaurant reviewer John Gilchrist. She often travelled to Banff, Edmonton and Kelowna to spend time with her close friends, especially Tammy and Mike and their daughter Alexandria whom Brenda loved dearly. Her laugh, sense of humour and caring nature will be missed.
Her happy place was her Calgary SW house filled with all manner of sunflowers where she enjoyed sitting in the sun drinking coffee or wine as the sun set in her backyard.
Brenda was predeceased by her parents, Jay Neal Marvel and June (Koehler) Marvel. She is survived by her brother William (Bill) Jay Marvel (Laura) and Godson and nephew Andrew Jason Marvel (Joyce) all of Ottawa, and many Koehler and Marvel cousins across Canada.
A memorial dinner will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to Diabetes Canada.
