Brandon Healey Obituary

Brandon Davis Healey, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, holding the love of his life, Julianne, in his arms, surrounded by family and friends. At just 36 years old, Brandon leaves behind his wife, Julianne; his 4-month-old son, Walter Davis; a large and loving family; and a multitude of close friends.

Like his life, Brandon’s battle with cancer was intense, courageous, and hard-fought. His final moments were filled with love, kindness, faith, laughter, and the kind of deep emotion that marked his entire life. Those present for his final days witnessed a masterclass in how to die well.

Brandon lived life wide open. He will be forever remembered for his unwavering love for Julianne and Walter, his deep devotion to family, his close and sacrificial friendships, his profound connection to southern Alberta rivers and the great outdoors, his passion for travel and adventure, and his joyful, welcoming spirit. His many exploits included: rock climbing in Thailand, surfing in Bali, island jumping through the Bahamas, studying Spanish in Costa Rica, family vacations in Mexico, exploring waterfalls in Hawaii, big game hunting in South Africa, fly fishing in New Zealand, cat skiing the Canadian Rockies, Scuba diving all over the world, and making memories in Tofino and Portugal with Julianne. He was an ‘includer’ and drew energy and enjoyment from bringing others alongside him for the journey.

Brandon dedicated himself fully to every passion he pursued - whether teaching others, leading teams, building friendships, or artfully casting a fly into the perfect hole to land that elusive wild trout.  His love and appreciation for music spanned widely from mainstream to folk to relatively obscure artists and formed the soundtrack to his many adventures.

Brandon had a genuine faith in Jesus which changed his life completely. More than just a place of leisure, the river was his sanctuary, a place where he met God, found peace, and experienced personal transformation. Those journeying with him alongside and through wild rivers saw glimpses of a soul deeply connected to life, beauty, and creation.

Born on September 5, 1988, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Brandon grew up surrounded by travel, adventure, and - as the youngest of five siblings - a healthy dose of mischief and survival. Though often the smallest in stature, he was always the largest in spirit, toughness, and desire for fun. His early years traveling the world with his family as Christian missionaries planted in him a fearless love of people and places, which only grew stronger with time. He spent his school years in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, before setting out to build his life in Calgary, Alberta.

Brandon met the love of his life, Julianne, in Calgary over ice cream and scooter rides. It didn’t take long before they started spending all their free moments together with endless conversations and Brandon’s endless hobbies. They were married in November 2020 and, even amidst the challenges of planning a wedding during a pandemic, it was a perfect day. Brandon and Julianne shared many adventures together, but their favourite times always included the Hilux and a river. Brandon was eager to teach Julianne how to fly fish and she quickly caught on. Brandon would beam with pride anytime she caught a fish, only to shake his head moments later when she would awkwardly lose said fish while trying to take a photo.

In December 2024, Brandon and Julianne welcomed their son, Walter Davis. In his short time with his son, Brandon poured a lifetime of love into him. He was so proud of Walter and was so excited for all the adventures to come.

Brandon’s zest for life, his large skill set, and his compassionate spirit took him across continents and reflected the many industries he pursued throughout his career.  In his young life, he worked as a paperboy, a gas station attendant, a furniture mover, and in a hardware store. After high school, he moved to Calgary, joining his brother Leighton’s company as a Production Manager, leading multiple crews over two busy summers. Before long, he launched his own thriving trades business, quickly earning a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and leadership. During gaps in production seasons, Brandon worked with Samaritan’s Purse rebuilding homes in Japan after the 2011 tsunamis, painted buildings at the Place of Rescue orphanage in Cambodia, and helped renovate the Casa Luz women’s shelter in Costa Rica.  Brandon worked as a skilled carpenter for one of Calgary’s top renovators, helped expand the beloved Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters, and was owner/operator of Topwater Fly Fishing Adventures, his successful fly-fishing outfitting company. Later in his career, Brandon found success and accolades leading high-performing sales teams at several fast-growing tech companies - including Bootkik (alongside his brother Leighton), SumoQuote, and most recently, Hemlane.

Brandon drew comfort from the Apostle Paul’s words in Romans 8 - especially this promise:

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26)
