Betty Beltran (née Alvarado), aged 84, passed away peacefully at Intercare Brentwood Care Centre on Saturday December 7, 2024.
Betty was born to parents Jose Antonio and Herminia Alvarado (née Martinez) in Bogota, Colombia on May 28, 1940. She was the third child of six children.
Betty is survived by her three loving daughters, Maria Claudia, Pilar and Gisella, her son-in-law Jose, and her two grandchildren, André and Antonio. Betty was predeceased by her parents, her brother Hernando, her sister Olga and her loving husband Manuel.
With a musician father and a mother who was a nurse, Betty was raised surrounded by a love of music as well as care and compassion for others. This care and compassion led her to study to become a school teacher, a life-long calling that would shine through for the rest of her life.
With her marriage to Manuel, she found a soul mate with whom she could travel and explore the world. After completing her teaching degree in Belgium, she returned home with Manuel to start their family before immigrating to Calgary, Canada in 1975. Although she learned to adapt to cold winters, she never forgot the close-knit warmth and familial ties she grew up with.
In working to help support her family, Betty found that teaching Spanish allowed her to share her culture that she was so proud of while welcoming non-Spanish speakers into the community. She did so with warmth, humour and a never ending enthusiasm.
For her daughters, she will be remembered for her enduring commitment to her family with pure love and compassion. She demonstrated this commitment without fail until the end of her life and though her presence will be missed, she will be remembered lovingly.
Prayers will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (1423 8 Ave SE) on Friday, December 20, 2024 7:00pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 3:00pm with a reception to follow at St. Gilbert's House.
