Arthur Roy Brookes passed away on July 2, 2020 in Calgary. He was born in Ironville, Derbyshire, UK on March 30, 1930.
Roy began his career with The National Coal Board after completion of his national service in the RAF. He soon gained his license as an electrician, a trade he enjoyed until his retirement. He also earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Roy and his family emigrated to Canada having been recruited by the owners of the McIntyre Porcupine Mine north of Jasper. They landed in Edmonton on January 07, 1969 amid one of the longest and deepest cold spells in local history. Between then and 1971 there were a few other moves until the family arrival in Canmore which proved to be the final one. When the Canmore mine closed in 1979 Roy went to work at Sunshine Village where he would be Chief Electrician until he retired in 1995.
Roy was a dedicated husband, father, grand and great grandfather. He also devoted many hours to serving his community via the Lions Club, Volunteer Ambulance driver and First Aid Attendant as well as volunteering for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Roy joined the Masonic Lodge in 1981 and held the honour of being Worshipful Master in 1987, 1990, and 1996. As an avid golfer Roy was awarded a lifetime membership at the Canmore Golf Club. He enjoyed retirement with his wife Shirley by travelling to many exotic places like Australia, New Zealand, many European countries, their favourite destination of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, and frequent trips to Chancellor Peak and Sibbald Lake in their motor home.
Roy is survived by Shirley, his wife of 67 years; daughter Jeredene Ollenberger (Darrell); son Andrew Brookes all from Canmore; grandchildren Caroline (Dwayne) and Elizabeth (Dan); and great grandchildren Robert and Bonnie. He was predeceased by his son Michael, and his two younger sisters in England, Rita Craven and Kathleen Thomas.
As per Roy’s request there will not be a service and cremation has already taken place.
