Antonio (Tony) Georgiou Obituary

It is with profound sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Antonio (Tony) Georgiou.  He left us peacefully on Sunday June 1st, 2025 at the age of 82 years, surrounded by his family.

Tony was born in Leonidio, Arcadia, Greece on July 26th, 1942.  He was the second youngest of 5 siblings.  Tony was "one of a kind", a true reflection of love, resilience and dedication.  He met and married the love of his life, Antonia (Tonya) in Greece 55 years ago. Tony and Tonya soon took a leap of faith and immigrated to Canada in 1970.  With his little sister Mando and her husband Kosta, already settled in Calgary, they too made Calgary their home and began building their lives together.

Tony and Tonya welcomed a beautiful baby girl Maria.  A couple of years later they welcomed their cherished son George.

Pappou Tony was blessed with four beautiful grandchildren, Andreas (Mackenzie), Tony, Francesca and Antonio who adored him and shared many special moments with their Pappou.

Tony was known for his unwavering commitment to his family and friends and worked hard to give his family everything they needed.  He leaves behind his devoted wife Antonia who's love and commitment to her husbands well being, gifted us all the opportunity to spend more quality time with our beloved father, grandfather, brother,  uncle and friend.  His children Maria and George (Gina) and his 4 precious grandchildren will continue to honour his legacy.  Tony also leaves behind his beautiful little sister Mando (Kosta) along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents George & Maria, his 3 older brothers Basili (Froso), Yianni (Maria), Niko (Soula) and his three nephews Giorgos, George and Dr. Dimitrios (Jim) Giannoulis.

Tony started his career in the hospitality industry in 1960.  He was one of the chefs on Aristotle Onassis's ships, where he prepared his infamous pastichio for Aristotle Onassis.

Tony first started at Hy's Steak House and then eventually worked for Caesar's Steak House for 45 years tending the bar.  He was affectionately known as "Dr. Tony"  by all his long time customers with all and any remedies they required behind the bar to make each and everyday a happy day.

Tony was always ready with a bit of free advice and a listening ear, creating a space where customers felt comfortable confiding in him.

Tony was full of incredible stories. Whether it was a story about the boats he worked on in Greece while on his worldwide travels, or customers at the restaurant that would confide in "Dr. Tony", he always had the family listening intently or laughing along side him.  His warm smile and infectious laugh will be deeply missed.

The Funeral Service will be held at St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at 11:00am
