With her family by her side, Angeliki “Coula” Devetzis passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, at the age of 90 years.
Yiayia was born on January 30, 1934, in Elaiochori, Greece. She was the oldest of five siblings and was predeceased by her brother Niko and sister Stavroula “Voula.” Coula is survived by her husband Andoni, children Perry (Angie) and Taso (Mary Ann), her grandchildren Nia and Christina, her sisters Georgia and Dina, and her great-grand-fur baby Iris.
Having been sponsored by her Uncle Andoni, she immigrated to Canada in 1956 and worked hard as a seamstress to support her family in Greece and sponsor her siblings Voula, Dina, and Niko to come to Canada. She met our Papou in Calgary, and they were married in August 1959.
She and Papou built their life in Canada with Voula and brother-in-law, George, cultivating one big family all together in their duplex. Their garden was second to none, and everyone looked forward to the massive tomato crop every year. You could look forward to a vegetable delivery accompanied by her catchphrase “Φά’το, είναι απ’ το κηπο” (Eat that, it’s from the garden). She revelled in caring for others, especially her family. She was constantly cooking, baking, and sewing. Making sure everyone was well-fed and beautifully dressed. But don’t you dare try to help; everything had to be just so, and it was always immaculate.
A lifelong devout Greek Orthodox, she was incredibly active in the church choir, Philoptocos and the Daughters of Penelope. You could always find Coula and Tony in their favourite pew at St. Demetrios Church, their spiritual home.
Our deepest thanks to the doctors, nurses and healthcare workers at Whitehorn Village for their exceptional care and kindness.
