Amy Conroy Obituary

After blessing Amy with 102 years, her Lord and Saviour enfolded Amy in God’s loving embrace. Her gentle spirit and welcoming heart endeared her to everyone she met.

Amy was born in Montreal to Oscar and Sophie Blickstead. She was the eldest of four children, Mildred (Ed), Betty (Eric), and Richard (Lise, and later, Rose). Amy completed her high school in Montreal and worked several jobs until she met Don Conroy, the love of her life, and married him on October 11, 1944.

They lived in Montreal until Don’s employer transferred him to Chicago. During the 9 years there, Amy gave birth to Maureen, Kathy, and John. Work demanded they return to Montreal in 1955. Amy was heartbroken when John succumbed to cancer at age 4. Her joy was restored the following year upon the birth of Michael. In 1959 Don was transferred to Calgary and they settled here.

Amy was an accomplished pianist, receiving the Highest Honours in McGill’s Conservatory program.

She and Don were avid Square and Round dancers and served on many committees. They were selected as dancers for the Opening Ceremonies of the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988. They loved to camp and spent innumerable weekends trailering with their friends. Amy’s happy outlook and easy laugh made her a welcome member at any social gathering.

Amy deeply loved her family. She treasured her grandchildren and took great delight in them, supporting them in their times of need and celebrating their every accomplishment. Her great-grandchildren filled her with joy. Babies and dogs always made her smile.

But Amy’s life was centred around her faith in Jesus Christ. She had a profound love for the Lord and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with Him in prayer. Amy was a member of the Catholic Women’s League. She made her profession in the Secular Franciscan Fraternity of St. Mary’s in 1989. She was a true prayer warrior, and many people looked to her to intercede for them.

Predeceased by her husband Don (1990), son John (1958), and siblings Mildred, Betty, and Richard, Amy leaves behind her beloved children, Maureen (Arlo), Kathy, and Michael (Theresa); cherished grandchildren, Aaron (Kate), Sonya (Steve), Sean (Alex), Scott (Danielle), Denise, Jordene, and Taylor; her precious great-grandchildren, Nate, Evan, Wallace, and Leona; nieces, nephews, their families, and many friends.

After suffering a stroke in 2016, Amy’s final years were spent at Bethany Calgary. She made friends with other residents and was always grateful to the staff for their help. She was a true witness to her deep faith during her time at Bethany and throughout her entire life.

Well done, thou good and faithful servant!
