Amalia Mylonas passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family, Saturday, April 18th, 2026.
Amalia is survived by her husband Dimitrios, brothers John and Tom, sister Eleni, Sister in laws Katina and Vasiliki, and her children George (Demetra, Sister Chysovalantou, Amalia, Demetri, Yianni, and Labrini) and Ilias (Kayla and baby Dimitri). She was a proud and deeply cherished grandmother to six grandchildren, who were the light of her life and brought her endless joy.
Amalia was born on June 15, 1939 in Polistilon, Greece to Aristotelis and Stavroula Doikas , one of six children. As the daughter of a schoolteacher, Amalia spent her early years in the village of Polistilo, near Kavala, Greece, where she was raised alongside her two sisters and three brothers in a close-knit family.
Amalia met the love of her life, Dimitrios, and together they built a life rooted in love, sacrifice, and devotion. In 1969, they emigrated to Toronto, Canada, beginning a new chapter filled with hope and determination. In 1975, the family moved to Calgary, Alberta, where they pursued an opportunity to expand the Mr. Submarine restaurant chain in Western Canada.
A talented professional seamstress, Amalia dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was an exceptional cook and homemaker, known for the warmth of her home and the generosity of her spirit. She gave of herself selflessly, always putting others before herself, and ensuring her family was supported, comforted, and loved.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. Her belief in the promise of the Lord never wavered, and she faced her journey with quiet strength, dignity, and unwavering faith. Amalia remained a devoted member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Calgary and supported Greek Orthodox monasteries and families in need throughout North America and Greece.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Elder Paisios and monks of St. Anthony’s Monastery in Florence, Arizona USA, as well as Gerondissa Efpraxia and all the nuns at St. John the Forerunner Monastery in Goldendale, Washington USA for all their unceasing prayers and spiritual guidance. We would also like to thank Father Maximos of the Antiochian Orthodox Church of Calgary and Father Thomas of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, for all their visits, spiritual guidance and prayers. We also extend our deepest thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Foothills Arthur Child Cancer Centre, as well as the doctors and staff at Agape Hospice whose compassion and care meant so much to Amalia and to all of us.
We are also grateful to the many family members—brothers, sister, sisters-in-law, in-laws, grandchildren , nephews, nieces and friends—who visited and supported her throughout her journey and continue to support our family. We would also like to thank the Paikos family for all their help and support.
As Greek Orthodox Christians, we do not say goodbye, but rather “until we meet again.” We take comfort in Christ’s promise of eternal life and are proud of our mother’s strength, courage, and steadfast faith to the very end.
Mom — we love you more than words can express. You will forever remain in our hearts, our thoughts, and our prayers. May your memory be eternal.
A prayer service will be held this Friday, April 24th, at 6:30pm at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church located at 1 Tamarac Crescent SW. Fellowship to follow next door in the hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Arthur Child Cancer Centre and Agape Hospice in Calgary.
