Alexandra (Sandra) Borys Fraser, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born October 14, 1927, Sandra was the youngest child of John and Mary Pyrcz, growing up on the family farm near Edmonton, Alberta. Raised alongside her four sisters and three brothers, Sandra cherished her upbringing, often recalling fond memories of driving the farm tractor, Sunday gatherings with homemade ice cream, and evenings filled with music.
Sandra's resilience shone through early in life when she battled and recovered from tuberculosis during her high school years. Undeterred, she pursued her education at the University of Alberta, earning a B.A. degree before furthering her studies in Toronto. She pursued her love of music, taking voice lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music, and completing a Bachelor of Library Science from the University of Toronto in 1952.
Her career as a librarian spanned several institutions including the Calgary Herald and Chevron Standard Ltd. where she implemented a cataloging system for their archives. In 1956 she met her beloved husband, Don Fraser. They married in 1956 and raised two daughters, Suzanne and Donna. Sandra's dedication to her family was unwavering; she balanced motherhood with a career at the University of Calgary's Education Library until her retirement in 1990. Throughout her life, Sandra pursued her artistic passions in sculpture, pastels, and painting, sharing these talents with her family.
Sandra's legacy lives on through her family, including her cherished grandson, Alec, whom she adored spending time with. Remembered for her strength, passion, and unwavering love, Sandra Fraser leaves behind a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
