RAMSAY, George McAvity

George McAvity Ramsay (Mac) was born on July 20, 1934, in St. john, NB to Viola and George Ramsay. Mac was educated at Rothesay Netherwood School in Rothesay, NB. New Brunswick is where his passion for fishing began, which lasted his whole life. He would fish with his father in the lakes and streams around Rothsay. Mac was an avid outdoorsman his entire life. Mac attended University at the Royal Military College, for 2 years. Afterwards he transferred to Queens to finish his Chemical Engineering Degree. Mac started his career at Dow Chemical, running the chemical plant in Sarnia. He received the Athlone Fellowship Award which allowed him to go to the London School of Economics for 2 years. Following a year of travel around the world, Mac settled once again in Toronto, where he took a job in the computer industry. This is when he met his first wife, Patricia. They were married in 1968. Their children, Tim and Susan, were born in 1970, 1971, respectively. Mac and his family left Ontario for Alberta in 1980 due to a transfer from his employer at the time--Control Data. Mac and his family enjoyed many weekends and holidays exploring the western part of Canada. Mac hunted, fished, hiked, camped, skied, played tennis but most of all found serenity in the outdoors. Later in life he took up lawn bowling where he met his new sweetheart, Carole Handford. They were married in 2006, and were happily married until her sudden passing in 2007. Mac is survived by his sister, Linda Ramsay; son, Timothy Ramsay; daughter, Susan Ramsay-McKitrick and her husband, Chuck; and grandsons, James and Elijah.
