Our Neighbour Sam
Samuel P. Kana, our beautiful neighbor, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Sarcee Hospice at the age of 85 years. Sam loved life, fixing stuff, building things, fishing, and being the neighborhood watch and handyman. A carpenter by trade, Sam worked at SAIT for several years until he retired. In our block he built garages, sidewalks, and fences. He also did plumbing and electrical work and could fix almost anything that was broken including lawnmowers and replacing a kitchen sink. This was never done for financial gain. Sam was a sun worshiper beginning in his teenage years and in the end succumbed to an aggressive form of melanoma which may be a lesson to us all. In all his years his only health issues were a ruptured appendix and a hernia. There was a time when he was an alcoholic who smoked three packs a day and used the "F" word in most every sentence. He considered himself to be privileged in that over thirty years ago he and God found each other and he became a changed man who lived his life for the betterment of all who were lucky enough to have known him. Sam is survived by his wife Helen; son Larry; daughter Colleen; sisters Kay, Liz, Sue, and Mary; and brother John. He will also be missed by his lovely granddaughter Denise and several other grandchildren. He also leaves his adopted family Mike, Odette, Aja and Christian Bezzeg. Sam was like a grandfather to our children and loved them as his own. Sam was a diamond in the rough, but he polished up so well in his Armani suit (see photo) and his world famous smile. His journey is now complete and he is finally at home. I believe that our inherent fear of death comes not from fear of the unknown, but the greater fear that our time here on Earth will not be remembered. Our neighbour Sam will Never be Forgotten. A Gathering will be held at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services (5502 2 Street SW) on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. Graveside service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Sam’s family through www.evanjstrong.com. Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES. (403) 265-1199.
