Rhoda Jane (Wilson) de Vlaming

Rhoda de Vlaming passed peacefully at her home, Southwood Care Centre, on Saturday, April 14, 2018 one month after her 80 birthday. She is survived by brothers Garth (Martha) and Wayne (Barbara), sisters Sheila Barnes (Ross) and Virginia Wilson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her partner, Gerald Caron. She treasured long time friends Diane, Stephen, Mac, Jane, Lorna and Llyn. At the age of 16, Rhoda began her teaching career in NS, followed by two years with DND in Germany. On her return, she settled in Calgary teaching in seven Calgary Board of Education elementary schools over 37 years and obtained BEd and MEd degrees. She served as assistant principal and principal and two years as an assistant superintendent. Rhoda found a newly built “cabin in the woods” in Canmore and shared it generously with friends and family. Warmth, grace, caring, honesty, generosity, affection, tenacity and forbearance were qualities she demonstrated to family, friends and caregivers. Rhoda became challenged by Parkinson’s and essential tremor which she battled for over twenty years. When she retired she continued to enjoy the outdoors, jazz, fine jewelry and travel as her health permitted. At Rhoda’s request there will be no service and her ashes will be returned to New Annan, NS.
