Omer Brandt Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Omer Brandt, beloved husband of Sophie Brandt of Calgary, on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at the age of 92 years. Besides his loving wife, Omer is survived by his brother, Al; his sister Loretta (Alain); sister-in-law Anne; his sons, Michael (Chrissie), Murray (Susan), Ken (Angie), and Craig (Shelley); his grandchildren, Joe (Cindy), Amanda (Allan), Sarah, Nicholas, Natasha, Paula, and John; his great-grandchildren, Haileigh and Madison; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Omer was predeceased by his brother, Raymond.

Omer Brandt was born in Swan Lake, Manitoba on October 19, 1926 to Cyril Brandt and Maria (nee DeBruyne). Growing up, hockey became his passion and he spent his free time playing whenever he wasn’t working in Hartwell’s General Store. Omer worked at many different jobs, but his hockey skills earned him a scholarship to Colorado College where he and Ron Hartwell set the team scoring record which still stands today. He loved music and often hosted a campus radio show. Graduating from college and majoring in Physics and Math, Omer joined Mobil Oil Canada. He started by doing field work in a number of different places in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and it was on one such assignment near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, 61 years ago, that he first set eyes on a girl named Sophie Brezden. From that moment, Omer knew that she was ‘the one’ for him and they were soon married.

After a number of moves, including Edmonton, Calgary, and Dallas, Omer and Sophie finally settled back in Calgary. They raised four boys (Michael, Murray, Ken, and Craig), and Omer continued to work diligently at Mobil for 35 years, earning many promotions and awards along the way. When not at work, he was "Mr. Fix-It", building furniture and remodeling rooms in the house. He would try to fix anything that was broken, no matter what it was. Omer loved the outdoors, but his favorite habitat was the golf course, especially Shawnee Slopes where he was a member for many decades and everyone knew him by name. He greatly enjoyed playing golf with his sons, and was always happy playing his weekly rounds with his favorite partner Sophie. Omer also loved watching hockey and football, and enjoyed family get-togethers for the Grey Cup or Stanley Cup championships. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family. Sunday dinners with the family were a special time for him, and the discussions were always lively.

He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

The family would like to thank the Rockyview Hospital Complex Care team for their care and concern, as well as all the caregivers on Unit 31 at the Foothills Hospital who were so kind and supportive during this difficult time.
