Marshall Perl Bye

Marshall Bye was a dedicated family man, educator and author. He grew up in the Peace River area during the depression which left an indelible mark on him... live the day. 

After a year at the University of Alberta, he taught in the Peace River country where he met and became enamoured by Evelyn and her three precious children, Joanne, Gerald and Carole. Marshall and Evelyn married in 1953 and they lead a full and exciting life until her death on May 17, 2014. He is survived by his daughter Carole [John] Elias; three grandchildren, Jolayne [Grant] Christensen, Scott [Sonya] Elias, all of Standard, and Justin Kohls of Calgary; two great grand children, Rosina Grace Christensen and Mateo Marshall Elias; and a brother, Dale [Gladys] Bye of Red Deer. Marshall was predeceased by his daughter Joanne Kohls, her husband Harvey Kohls, and his son Gerald Banks. He was also predeceased by his parents Wallace and Lilly Bye; and two older brothers, LeRoy and Francis. 

Marshall and Evelyn taught in various rural schools. Marshall relished the time with his family, especially enjoying tenting and hiking in the mountains, and teaching Gerald the fine points of hunting pheasants, ducks and geese. He also renewed his interest in Scouting by becoming a Scout Leader. While Marshall was principal in Standard, he was granted a summer scholarship at Stanford University to investigate the new math and science programs of the 1960’s. Later the couple joined the Calgary School Board where he became an administrator-supervisor of mathematics. He also received a scholarship to pursue his Masters Degree in mathematics at Wayne University in Detroit. Marshall was invited to join a publishing company to co-author mathematics textbooks, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. Marshall took a sabbatical at the University of London. He and Evelyn spent the year in England and on the continent. The University of London Institute of Education awarded the title “Associate of the Institute”.  Upon his return to the CBE he became involved with Dr. B. Harrison and Dr. T. Schroeder to research how students learn. Upon retirement from the CBE, he taught at the University of Calgary and continued writing textbooks. He and Evelyn traveled most of Western Canada and Northwestern USA in their motorhome. Camping, including winter camping with their grandchildren, which gave them many hours of sheer pleasure and lasting memories. International travel took them to all the continents, except the Antarctica. His publishing obligation took them all over the USA and England. Marshall became an avid Naturalist, meeting new and interesting people while spending many wonderful hours volunteering for Trout Unlimited and publishing their local newsletter. To use his words, “I’m blessed with a wonderful family entertaining friends”. He enjoyed many, many hours enhancing Evelyn’s last years at the Bow View Manor where he developed strong bonds with the marvelous staff there.

Marshall later met his current wife Anne Bye at the lodge where they both resided. They were married and had 4 wonderful years of companionship together.  He was a caring and loving husband, and true gentlemen.  Anne’s daughters, Tracey and Lou-Anne, and their families, enjoyed Marshall’s positive outlook on life and fun loving nature. 

He will be greatly missed by all.
