Marilyn Christensen Obituary

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our dear wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandma, teacher, counsellor, mentor and friend, Marilyn Christensen on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the age of 73 years.

Marliyn was born in Toronto, Ontario the first daughter of Mary and Peter Gregorwich.  After the war, the family settled outside Westlock, Alberta.  Farm life wasn’t an easy life, but the family grew with the addition of siblings Murray and Shirley. After graduating from high school at age 16, Marilyn headed to the University of Alberta.  During this time, she also met and married Frank Grigel.

They eventually settled in Calgary, where Marilyn returned to university to earn a degree in education. Together they had son Frank (Joanne) and daughter Colleen.  As Marilyn continued to teach, her natural ability to connect with and help people became apparent. She completed a Master’s degree in counselling from Gonzaga University and expanded her role to counselling students. Eventually she started another career as a psychologist.

Marilyn’s love of life and interest in literature, music, and art led to her connection with Paul Christensen.  They were married in 1994 and together they talked and explored life, the arts, and sports – especially the Calgary Flames.  She also welcomed grandchildren Megan and Carter, taking pride in all their accomplishments.

As she grew older, Marilyn began to experience the impacts of years of diabetes.  With Paul’s support and encouragement she faced every challenge with a positive attitude. She was determined to overcome every obstacle and continued to live her life to the fullest.  Never wanting to miss out on any experience, she took every opportunity to get access to every event.

We would like to fondly remember Marilyn and share all the joy she brought to our lives.

A private family service will be held. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Marilyn’s family through www.evanjstrong.com.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to PALS (Pet Access League Society) (3019 – 21 Street NE, Calgary, AB T2E 7T1), or to the donor’s charity of choice. Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES.  (403) 265-1199.
