John Walters Obituary

Fred Walters of Calgary, passed away suddenly at Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton, on October 31, 2018 at the age of 81 years.

Fred was predeceased by his wife Marion Walters (nee Vergo), on April 28, 2018. He is survived by his brother Larry, of British Columbia, and his sister Ruth, of Ontario; his three children, Janis (Kelvin), John (Brenda) and Janean (Chris); his 5 grandchildren, Marcel (Karen), Tai, Brianna (Brad), Kayley (Matt) and Meghan (Martin) and his great-grandchild, Karver.

Fred proudly served with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1953-1982, which included 2 tours of Peacekeeping in Cyprus and several postings throughout his career - three in Calgary, two in Germany, Borden and Winnipeg.  His last posting was in Calgary where he retired from the service.  From there, Fred began civilian life.  He managed the Housekeeping Unit at the Foothills Hospital for several years.  After leaving full time employment, Fred worked for a short time with Commissionaires, then decided to move to the village of Beiseker in 1994 where he found his passion to volunteer with many organizations. This included the Council for the Town of Beiseker; he was strongly involved with the recycling program for Beiseker; he was extensively and passionately involved with the Railway Museum of Beiseker, which sadly burned down a few years ago; and was also involved with the Acme Legion. From there, until the day of his passing Fred was actively involved with the Lions Club of Alberta, L.O.A.F., the Lions Youth Camp and was an active member of the Kensington Legion. Additionally, he held several positions during his involvement with the Lions.

Moving back to Calgary, he and his wife resided at the Lions Village where he also was actively involved with the Social Committee.  In addition, Fred took on part time work as Concierge at The Princeton Grand where all staff and owners appreciated his presence and will miss him dearly.

The Family sends heartfelt thanks to all Doctors and Nurses of the Cardiac care units at both Foothills Hospital of Calgary and Misericordia Community Hospital of Edmonton.
