Joan Carriere Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom and gramma, Joan “Gail” Carriere. Gail passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her loving family, on December 2, 2019, at the Peter Lougheed Hospital.

Gail was born in Athabasca, Alberta on December 22, 1942. She moved to Edmonton, Alberta shortly after she was born with her mother, father, and 6 sisters. In her early years, Gail enjoyed attending school, spending time with her loved ones, and reading as many books as she could. She was a very happy, chatty little girl and would go on to spread joy throughout her life. Gail then went on to meet her husband Chuck and married him in 1964.  They began a beautiful life together, raising their four children.

Gail often spoke of fond memories of time working at the flower shop, the Hudson’s Bay Portrait Studio, Wilson’s Stationery, and Baby Bear Daycare. During her later years, she spent time as a stay at home mom, loving grandmother, and making her family as big as she could; wrapping her heart around anyone who walked through her front door. Gail enjoyed sharing stories of her youth with family and friends and being surrounded by those she loved. She took up knitting, crochet, and needle point in her free time but could master any craft thrown her way. There was always a mystery book sat aside from her but took quite a shine to Netflix and Facebook once she knew how to use them!

Gail is survived by her her sisters, Joyce Beauchamp, Maureen Moffatt, Jacqueline Falk (Vic), Sharon Kowalchuk (Jim) and Dawne Grover (Garry); her loving children, Michele Burnett (Ron), Lawrence Carriere (Kari), and Colette Blöchlinger (Travis Hordyski); as well as her grandchildren, Robert Burnett (Brittany Nolais), Samantha Mayo (Christopher Beckman), Emma Burnett (Jassy Forbes), Noah Burnett, Maks Carriere, and Charlie Carriere; and great grandchildren, Dominic and Alexzander Burnett, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother, Miriam Merschitz; her father, John Merschitz; her husband, Charles Carriere; her daughter, Maureen Carriere; her sister, Thelma Dronsfield; and her brothers in law, Con Beauchamp, Bud Dronsfield and Darrell Moffatt.

Gail will always be remembered for her infectious laugh, enormous heart, and ability to light up a room. She lent an open ear and an even more open heart to anyone that needed it. She was Gramma to many more than just her grandchildren. Gail will forever be in our hearts.

Please join us as we celebrate the life of Gail Carriere at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel (2620 - 32 Avenue NE) on Friday, December 13, 2019 at 1:00pm.
