Jo-Anne Elizabeth Thomson

It is deepest sorrow that our family announces the unexpected passing of Jo-Anne (Jo), at the tender age of 48 years on Monday, April 3, 2017 in Strathmore, Alberta. "She was the most kindest giving woman you would have every met". Jo was granted her angel wings, those who were privileged and blessed to have had them touch our souls and spirit "we" now can call ourselves the fortunate and privileged ones. Her courage, strength and "sisu" made us believe in seizing each and every moment in life and believing in "magic". We are all honored by those special moments in time. May the light of her spirit shine within all of us. Jo's beautiful smile, generous spirit and bravery live within all of us forever. She was an inspiration, a beautiful soul and we are all truly blessed. Born on October 28, 1968 in Iserlohn, Germany to Danny and Raija (Laukkanen) Thomson. Her father was in the military which allowed us to travel extensively throughout Canada; Halifax, NS, Edmonton, AB, Victoria, BC, and finally to Calgary AB, where she graduated from Central Memorial High School in 1986. In high school, she excelled in sports, especially running, and set a city-wide record in running. After graduating high school Jo travelled to England and Europe with a friend. Following her world-wide travels, she worked at the Warehouse and then Underground bar furthering her portfolio to gained the experiences to pursue her goal in owning her own bar The "Taz" with help and support from family and as a result of her success she owned 4 bars, 3 in Calgary and 1 Edmonton. Jo was very proud and honored with her Finnish heritageculture. Growing up as children we had the privilege of living in Finland every summer and this was a big part of her, her being and soul. Jo was a very spiritual person and spread her beautiful wings with everyone she knew. "In the midst of our lives, we must find the magic that makes our souls soar". She always made sure that the magic was spread where everywhere she went. Jo is survived by her mother Raija Thomson; father Dan Thomson; sister Karin McLaughlan; niece Kaija McLaughlan; Marty York; stepsons, Dustin and Byron York; Godmother Eeva-Liisa; aunts, uncles, cousins, and a grandchild. A celebration of Jo's life will be held at the family residence (Wheatland county 224041 range rd 225, the google coordinates are 50.900060,-113.02 (403-680-7509)) on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
