Welcome to the memorial page for

Fred Savard

April 14, 1920 ~ July 4, 2017 (age 97) 97 Years Old
God took Fred kicking and screaming. God said, I'm sorry Fred, its time - date July 4, 2017, Fred was 97. He wanted to make it to 100. As per Fred's request, there will not be a funeral. Instead he would like you to gather with family and friends for a good meal and raise your glass for a toast to say it was nice to know you Fred, on the golf tee box hit it long and straight and say that one was for you Fred, bowl 3 strikes and this is for you Fred, go skating at the Oval with friends and celebrate my life in your own way.

Fred was born in Acheson, AB April 14, 1920 to a family of 12 children. He is survived by his last remaining brother, Wilford (86) of Carvel, AB and many, many nieces and nephews, his common law wife of 27 years, Ida Checknita, her son Douglas and his children, Courtney and Ryan. He was Courtney and Ryan's surrogate Grandfather. Fred met Ida when they were both seniors in 1989 on a golf trip in Mexico. They were both retired and, at this stage of their lives, they tended to live in the here and now, however, in his past Fred was a farmer, in the air force from 1943 to 1945, lived in Toronto after the war, came to Calgary in 1960 and had a variety of jobs finishing work life with Buyers Transport in 1990. He was a kind, gentle, compassionate man. He manned the Salvation Army kettles every December, volunteered for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes, United Way and many other charities. He loved his family, his favorite color was red, favorite time of year was spring, had good sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. Fred and Ida were soulmates, they had good times and a fun and happy life golfing, bowling, skating and travelling on golf trips every January from the Bahamas to Panama, Hawaii and Mexico. They enjoyed socializing and playing cards with many friends and especially enjoyed family gatherings. The family would like to thank the Staff, Doctors and Nurses at the Bethany Calgary for their kindness and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or Bethany Calgary.
