Dr. Henry Albert Kennedy Jr.

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr Henry Albert Kennedy Jr. on Monday, October 15, 2018, in Calgary AB, at the age of 79 years. Henry was born May 4, 1939 in Montreal, Quebec, the son of Henry Sr. and Pearl Kennedy. He attended McGill University and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Commerce in 1960 and then graduated with a Masters in Taxation from Western and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Washington in 1973. Henry moved to Alberta in the early 60’s and made his home in Edmonton where he met and married Agnes Szekely (1938-1989), and soon after they welcomed their children Mark and Sarah. After Agnes’ passing in 1989 Henry met and married Catherine Elizabeth Ballard in 1991 and welcomed her children Nicole and Craig into their family. Henry received his Chartered Accountants designation in 1962 and spent his career teaching Business, Accounting & Taxation as an associate professor at the University of Alberta.  He loved collaborating with his fellow professors and students. He also enjoyed researching and publishing in the Journal of Accounting Research. Henry loved living an active life and was always on the go. He was an active member of the church including signing in the choir. Henry could often be found outside enjoying long walks through downtown or on the golf course. He enjoy the arts, theatre and going to farmers markets. Despite being a type 1 diabetic from the age of 14 years old, Henry had a deep love and appreciation for food, especially for a great cup of coffee. He was a highly educated man and an avid reader who also enjoyed long conversations and debates on a wide variety of topics. Henry will be missed by his loving family. He is survived his wife Catherine; sister Florence (Jimmy); his son Mark (Sasha; children Maya & Zen); his daughter Sarah (Andrew; children Austin, Kaylie, Anthony); Nicole (children Jonathan, Emily) and Craig (child; Makenzie). Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18th Avenue SW, Calgary) on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral  on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 1:00 pm.
