It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing, of our Dad and Grandfather, Dewey John Douma, age 82, on August 11, 2018, at the Calgary Foothills Hospital.
Dewey was born in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan on Sept 18, 1935 to Douwe John and Antoinette (Nettie) (Vant Sant) Douma. He and his beloved wife Pauline (Polly) nee Honoroski, were married for 43 years until her passing in 2001. He was predeceased by his brother Wayne and sister Thelma.
Dewey is survived by his children Yvonne (Rick) Douma-Honsinger and Ray (Sandy) Douma, grandchildren, Shelby, Lindsay and Matthew, numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
Dewey was a man who loved his family, his numerous friends, Country and Bluegrass music and the Calgary Stampede. He was an accomplished Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle and Mandolin player who was typically the lead in the open garage and family music gatherings, with many talented relatives playing along. Dad moved from Saskatoon to Calgary in 1966 to start a new life for his young family. He was a skilled and trained Sheet Metal worker culminating in a successful business in Calgary. Dewey was sympathetic to those in need and applied his mechanical and metalworking skills to help out friends, neighbours and strangers alike. No matter what the occasion, Dad was always up for a party. He was an active Legion Member for many years, with family and friends sharing fond memories at the Friday night Meat Draws.
Although his voice is now quiet, we will never forget the laughter, the family gatherings and the music.
He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion 285, 9202 Horton Rd SW Calgary on Friday, Oct 5th, at 3 PM, 2018, with a Celebration of Life to follow. For those wishing to attend the Internment, it will be held at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 6, 2018.
