Dawn Robertson Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Dawn Robertson (Esler) on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at the age of 55 years. Dawn fought a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She was born and raised in Calgary.  Dawn and Craig were married in Calgary in 1986 and raised three very special children, Brett, Matthew and Taylor who were the love of her life. Dawn began her employment with the City of Calgary in July, 1980.

She started working with the Calgary Police Service in October, 1981 in the Records Processing Unit (RPU). She had a highly successful career, was promoted and held several positions throughout her career. Dawn worked in RPU until moving to the Intelligence Evaluation Unit as the Unit Supervisor in the fall of 2016. Dawn was a valued and dedicated employee of the Calgary Police Service for over 37 years.

Dawn was a very loyal and selfless person, always putting everyone ahead of herself. She was an avid reader and always had a novel on the go or could be counted on to watch a new movie.  Family and friends were always welcome for a weekly dinner and movie, which culminated in warm laughter and stories.  She very much enjoyed travelling to Mexico on numerous vacations with friends and family as well as a special holiday to Hawaii with her Grandmother, Violet Esler.

Dawn had a very close relationship with her dad.  She was the apple of his eye.  Not only did they have a wonderful father/daughter relationship, but they were also co-workers at Calgary Police Service.  They were a great support to each other professionally and personally.  Dawn could always find time to spend with her dad, be it a coffee, dinner, or a telephone call.  Dad held his little girl’s hand all of her life, right until the end.  We know that she treasured every moment with him and will be looking over him every day.

Dawn was a very private person, but would open her heart and home to anyone that needed her.  Her very best friends, Sue, Janet and Irene, have become adopted members of our family and will forever be welcome.  Dawn could bring a smile to everyone in the room.  We will always remember weekend dinners and scrambling to find a spot to sit in the living room and take in the weekly movie.  We could never get through an entire movie without engaging in fun conversation.

Dawn loved her dogs, they were her other children.  Jackson, her Teacup Yorkie, was her most recent fur baby, he was her miracle puppy and, although small, he was a bundle of love for Dawn.  She was always so happy with her pets, cuddled up on her lap or snoozing on her bed.

Dawn helped to take on the role of mom to her younger sister, Stacey.  After Carol was diagnosed with cancer when Stacey was 11, Dawn took Stacey’s hand and provided her with strength and guidance for many years, right up until her recent passing.  Dawn gave everything to everyone, and this can be felt through to Stacey’s children, who also benefit from Dawn’s selfless giving and kindness.

Dawn was predeceased by her mother, Carol in 1992, and her brother, Scott in 2016.  She is survived by her father, Len (Fran), her beloved children, Brett, Matthew and Taylor (Josh) and sister, Stacey Schiebelbein, along with numerous aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Agape Hospice for their dedicated and compassionate care of Dawn.  In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire memorial tributes may be made directly to the Agape Hospice, 1302 – 8 Avenue NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 or to a charity of their choice.
