It is with profound sadness that the family of Bruce Buchanan announces his sudden passing on Friday June 2nd, 2017 at the age of 48. Bruce died as a result of depression, after successfully managing bouts with the disease for many years.
Bruce was a devoted husband to his soul mate, Nicola. His greatest joy and gift to the world was his daughters, Emily and Meg. His bond with school friends was strong and he equally cherished the new friends he met along the way. He will be remembered fondly for his love of games, music and literature and was always the first to join in a game with his nieces and nephews. Bruce had a passion for golf and enjoyed fishing and camping during the summer months. He will be dearly missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Bruce was born and raised in Edmonton where he became an exceptional student and athlete, excelling in English and playing both soccer and hockey at a competitive level. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Education degree, and later completed a Master's degree in Education while teaching and working as principal for Rundle College in Calgary. While at Rundle, he coached the senior high school boy's volleyball team for many successful seasons and influenced the lives and trajectory of many young students. Bruce leaves us with a legacy of learning, and the fostering of community.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife Nicola, as well as his cherished daughters, Emily and Meg, brothers Ian (Cindy) and Rob, sister Carolyn (John), and father David. A loving and devoted extended family includes mother-in-law Rita, sister-in-law Michelle, brother-in-laws Jim and Michael, and many nieces, nephews, and a grandniece.
A memorial will be held for family and friends on Monday June 12th that 2pm at River Park Church, 3818 14A St. SW Calgary. A subsequent Celebration of Life for all students, staff, parents and alumni will be held at Rundle College (7375 17th Ave SW) at 6:30 pm on June 13.t.h
Some of the consequences of Bruce's death are still unknown. A trust fund has been established to support the family through this time. For donation instructions to the trust held at ATB please email buchananfamily08@gmail.com
