HICKLIN, Anne Agnew
August 17, 1926 - April 6, 2017
Anne Hicklin (or "Fred" as she was known by some) was born in Medicine Hat on August 17, 1926 to parents Bessie and Allan Hopkins. She was fortunate enough to grow up with 7 brothers and sisters all of whom kept in touch over the years. She was very active in her early years, playing volleyball and baseball on the school teams. This desire to be active only increased as she got older. In 1956 she married the love of her life Lloyd Hicklin and moved to Calgary where they began their own family. She loved the outdoors and had beautiful vegetable gardens that eventually blossomed into beautiful flower gardens as well. She was always active whether it was, gardening, badminton or just out for a walk through Glenmore Park. She and Lloyd loved Salmon fishing with friends and family while the kids were growing up and could be found on Vancouver Island every year in the summer fishing and combing the beaches for oysters and clams every low tide. She loved to camp at Mara Lake and Shuswap with another group of friends year after year and enjoyed water skiing and boating on the lake. She and Lloyd loved to dance and well into her senior years would be square dancing with the Banff Trailers. As she got older she and Lloyd joined a seniors hiking club and were on the bus to hike or cross country ski in the Kananaskis summer and winter. In these last number of years she could be found at Sylvan Lake almost every weekend of the summer at the cottage pruning the flowers or keeping the spider webs at bay. She was usually the last to go to bed after sitting around the bonfire every night with the entire family.
Anne had two wonderful children, Greg (Jane); grandchildren Jaclyn and James; Sandy (Doug); grandchildren Kyle and Sara. She adored her grandchildren and was always keen to spend time with them. She loved a good joke whether it was on her or she was doing it to someone else. Anne lived by the motto that laughter was the best medicine. After Lloyd passed away in 2008 she moved into Garrison Green Seniors Community and began a new and wonderful chapter in her life. Many lasting friendships were formed as she settled into her new life. Desserts were the best and you could have a BLT any time you wanted. Her kids or grandkids would pop in for coffee or lunch and were always introduced to the table mates of the day. She continued to be very active walking with friends and family daily through the community. Anne passed away on April 6, 2017 at the tender age of 90. She will be greatly missed by all that were blessed to become her friends.
