Alma Ball passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at the Chinook Care Centre Hospice in Calgary at the age of 93 years.
Alma was born in Stanhope, Newfoundland and was raised on a nearby subsistence family farm. Her father, William, was a self-employed fisherman and logger and her mother, Maud, tended the home, family and farm. She emigrated from Newfoundland to Canada in 1944 where she lived in Halifax and then moved to Calgary in 1949. Alma spent many years working on Calgary's North Hill at Douglas Drugs and Chesney's Hardware, as well as in fine jewelry at Classic Jewelers in downtown Calgary. In later years, she became a partner in a small trucking business until her retirement. Her many interests included gardening, home improvements, cooking and baking, and craft work. She enjoyed watching pro wrestling and horse racing. Alma’s favourite books were cookbooks, health and home remedies; her favourite TV shows were Swamp People, Mountain Men, Big Tuna, Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz; and her favourite music was maritime and traditional songs. She loved visiting with family in Ontario.
Alma will be lovingly remembered by her two sons, James, and Donald (Karen).
At Alma’s request, no service will be held.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Chinook Care Centre Hospice for their excellent care of Alma.
